Ian ThomasAs World Cup Fever grips... err, the World, its noticeable by its lack of coverage here in the US.  Yes, you can see the games on TV and, yes there is some newspaper coverage, but it would be easy to not know that it even existed.  How could people not know that the biggest sporting event in the world was underway?

Well it kind of reminded me of records management.  How many times have you tried to explain what you do, only to be met by blank expressions, forcing you to resort to the answer that you are "in storage"?  How could such a large, and important industry, not be well known?  It's a challenge we all face to educate businesses of the importance of records management and why they should not ignore it.

And that's one of the reasons why we shall keep working to develop and provide the software tools to help you meet that challenge.  From our RSWeb.NET software to the networking opportunities on our online User Forum.

In the meantime, it's great to use this edition of the newsletter to share so many ways that we are working together to learn, share and expand in this great industry.

As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter.

What's New at O'Neil

Strategic Partner Section Expands

We have often been asked to list our customers, but never felt that was the right thing to do.  The reasons for displaying a list is obvious: we get to show the largest user group of commercial records management companies in the world, and you are able to contact other O'Neil users should you need coverage in their location.  So what stopped me posting this?  There's some historical reasons and some confidentiality concerns that come into play, but many of these were overcome thanks to you and Bing

That's right. A simple search showed how many of you were proudly displaying your relationship with O'Neil Software.  This created a great opportunity to share this list, as it is in the public domain, and you can see excerpts of the results at:  http://www.oneilsoft.com/strategic-partners

Don't see your company there?  Simply click on the Add Your Site button and we will get you included.  Don't forget to also register for the online User Forum, where you can interact with many of these companies directly.

RS-SQL Statistics Deadline Approaches!

If you want to be included in the RS-SQL Statistics program and receive a customized report on your operating statistics verses other O’Neil RS-SQL users, you must run the query and send it to O’Neil by June 25th.

If you are unaware of this new initiative which was introduced at the recently concluded O’Neil Strategic Partners Conference, it is intended to assist record centers around the world in monitoring key operating metrics. These key metrics are then aggregated by O’Neil with reports provided to participating record centers so they can evaluate their metrics against similarly sized operations.

A few questions you may ask:

1) Is it easy to run the query? Yes – merely download the query from the Forum at http://www.oneilsoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=705.0. It is located under the General Category section named General RS-SQL Discussion. Then choose RS-SQL Statistics and go to the 4th post. Then download the query, run it from any work station that has an RS-SQL active database, and then send the csv file to mike.jacobs@oneilsoft.com.

2) Can I see a sample of the customized report? Yes – this has been posted on the oneilsoft.com Forum at http://www.oneilsoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=705.0. This downloadable file is the 6th post under the RS-SQL Statistics section.

3) Who will receive the customized reports? Only those participating and submitting the query will be included. So if you want to see information on a large cross section of the O’Neil base, I highly recommend you participate.

Act now and you can still be included in this invaluable new program.

Microsoft Update: Support Ending for Windows XP with SP2 and Windows Vista RTM

Microsoft support for the Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) operating system ended on July 13, 2010; support for Windows Vista without any service packs ended April 13, 2010. .

After October 22, 2010, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) system builders will no longer be able to manufacture PCs that run the Windows XP operating system.

Note: If you are running the 64-bit edition of Windows XP with SP2, you’ll continue to be eligible to receive Microsoft support and updates until April 8, 2014. There is no SP3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP.

To find out if you are running the 64-bit version of Windows XP, go to the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. If you don’t see "64-bit" listed, then you’re running the 32-bit version and need to install the Windows XP SP3. .

As always, if you are unsure or require further clarification on any of the technical topics discussed... simply ASK! Remember, we are only a telephone call or email away. For our contact details, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first. News on the effects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any issues.

2010 Classroom Training Dates

The next training courses scheduled for the classroom in 2010 are:

July 12       RS-SQL Administration - Critical Setup
July 13-14  RS-SQL Standard Operations
July 15-16  RSWeb.NET

These courses are available in the US at our office in Irvine, CA, as well as in the O’Neil Software Offices in Milton Keynes, UK and Brisbane, Australia

The complete 2010 Calendar is available on our website and user forum.

Also, do remember that specific training classes not scheduled may be requested and will be offered on demand, based on an adequate number of attendees.  This means if you don't see what you want on our schedule, request something else.

This month we look at another question that our support team or User Forum was asked. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question: I still have some of the old PDT3100 scanners and have just purchased some of the new [RSMobile] scanners.  My guys in the warehouse get confused on which communications screens to go too.  There's got to be an easier way?
