Information

Can you believe that it is July already?  It amazes me as the date for this years' Strategic Partner Conference is rapidly approaching.   Everything is arranged and already 50 of the available 150 places have been booked (see What's New below).

It was great to see O'Neil's RS-SQL mentioned in two publications this month.  In the ARMA Buyers Guide is an interesting article featuring GPRS and on-line I found an older article/reference that I had not previously seen.

Talking of old, this month's RS-SQL tip is an "oldie but Goodie".  Do you remember this one?

As always, I hope you enjoy this edition.

Strategic Partner Conference Registration  - 30% Full

With just about two months to go, we now have 30% of the capacity filled for the conference.

If you have not attended one of these conferences before, be sure not to miss this opportunity to network with other users, meet the support & development team and learn how to maximize your software investment. Registration is required for all customers who wish to attend and space is limited to the first 150 people. Past experience has shown that these sell out fast... so don't delay.

If you are travelling from a country where a visa to enter the US is required, you can download a letter to support your application at:

http://www.oneilsoft.com/partner/pdf/ConferenceVisaApplicationLetter.pdf

For those of you who have registered, don't forget to nominate yourselves for a Strategic Partner Award. The awards ceremony is always one of my favorite events at the conference, and usually a lot of fun too, so make sure you have a chance to win an O'Neil Strategic Partner Award.

Need some ideas when setting up a Location Scheme?

Setting up a location scheme, especially for the first time, can be a confusing affair.  Should you use a numeric scheme?  Should you use an alpha-numeric scheme?  To make things easier, we have created a new datasheet, which attempts to shed some light on this subject.

Available for download at ds0032_Location_Scheme.pdf this datasheet gives a brief outline so you can discuss options with your Business Development or Support Representative.

SQL Server 7.0 and RS-SQL Support

We have previously announced that RS-SQL databases are no longer supported on SQL Server 7.0. RS-SQL officially requires SQL Server 2000 or greater, but as of now, and even with the new version 3.06, RS-SQL should function perfectly on a SQL Server 7.0 database, as we have not yet made use of any SQL Server feature that does not exist in SQL Server 7.0.

HOWEVER, as of RS-SQL 3.07, we will be utilizing a new feature that was first introduced in SQL Server 2000. So as of RS-SQL 3.07, SQL Server 7.0 will no longer function correctly and the database upgrade will fail to create the tables necessary for version 3.07 to function.

Please plan your upgrade to SQL Server 2000 or above, before we release RS-SQL version 3.07.

Do You Remember the Datawand?

We first introduced the datawand with RSDos, in the early 1980's.  Since then we have continued to support the use of the Datawand, even though Symbol/Motorola stopped selling and supporting them many years ago.  Unfortunately, it is now coming close to the time to retire the datawand.  After 20 years of service, they deserve a good rest and the first version of RS-SQL released in 2009 will no longer support their use.  There is an extensive range of RSMobile devices to chose from to replace the Datawand. Contact your Business Development Representative for details.

You can keep yourself up-to-date with planned obsolescence or replacements from O'Neil Software and our partners, via our End of Sale/Service schedule.

As always, if you are unsure or require further clarification on any of the technical topics discussed... simply ASK! Remember, we are only a telephone call or email away. For our contact details, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first. News on the effects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any issues.
