I'm writing this newsletter while some things come to an end and new beginnings come in sight.

The last training class of the year is underway and the final patch for version 3.04 has been issued.  On October 30, the current wireless MF2t printer model was replaced and we are issuing 12 months notice for the end of support for the humble datawand, which has been in service since the first RSDos system in the early 1980's.

But this all brings exciting new times ahead: The next version of RS-SQL is being finalized, with some great new features;  Testing of RSMobile on the AT&T network is complete, and the results are very encouraging; we have added our 67th country; and 2008 looks to be one of the most exciting years yet.

As always, I hope you enjoy this edition.

New Symbol Drop Test Video Now Available

By now, most of your are familiar with the original MC9000 series mobile device video showing how robust it is.  If not, take a quick pause and watch here. This particular video was "unofficial" so its is interesting to see one posted on YouTube by Symbol themselves.

In this latest video, an MC9000 device is dropped from 85ft along with a rival product.  Only one bounces and continues to work.  I will let you guess which one.  Nevertheless, it is interesting to watch. Watch here, sit back and enjoy.

Ruggedness on its own is great but when you couple this device with O'Neil's award winning RSMobile software, you really have a winning combination. Contact your Business Development Representative to learn all about the MC909x mobile devices and our RSMobile software, now certified for use on AT&T's data network.

Tip
Let's be Precise

Want to ensure you scan the correct item when working with barcodes that are close together?

The Precise Mode option offers a check box to enable/disable precise scanning mode on your mobile device. When Precise Mode is turned on, the cross hairs of the scanner beam must hit the barcode directly in order for the scan to work. This can be helpful when scanning several barcodes that are close together. If Precise Mode is not turned on, the barcode can be anywhere in the scanning range and the scan will work. Precise Mode is turned off by default.

To turn on Precise Mode, from the Tools menu, select Admin and then Scan Settings.

Select the Precise Mode check box and tap OK to return to the Admin menu. Tap Main Menu to return to the main menu.

The Focus Position option allows you to change the focal distance from Near to Far. By default the focus position is set to Near and this seems to work well for most scanners. However, some users have found that the Far setting works better for them. This feature is only available on imager devices, and may not be supported on all imager devices so check with your local technical support team, if you are unsure if your device is compatible.

To change the focus position, from the Tools menu, select Admin and then Scan Settings.

Select the focus position and tap OK to return to the Admin menu. Tap Main Menu to return to the main menu.

Do you think your Scanner is DOA?  Here are some important tips to get you started.

Below are some tips for people who believe their scanner to be Dead on Arrival. This is very unusual as every scanner is personally tested by a member of our support team and so, usually, the problem is much less serious.  So lets highlight a few common problems:

1. Read the O’Neil document Getting Started With Your RSMobile Scanner that was shipped with your scanner. This has some clear guidance on getting started and will be a big help.

2. Insert the battery and fully charge all devices overnight before use. This will ensure that both the primary and backup batteries are charged to capacity. The backup battery is located internally in the scanner and is not the battery you pop in and out. Also, a proper first charge is critical to the life of any device battery.

3. MC9000’s can appear sluggish after first turning on. After using for few minutes it will begin to become more responsive.

4. Make sure Microsoft Active Sync is installed and that the device connects before attempting to initialize in RS-SQL.

5. For devices that fail to connect via Active Sync ensure desktop and corporate firewall policies allow Active Sync access to the computer.

6. For devices that fail to initialize in RS-SQL ensure end users have full rights to the RSSQLCOM folder, generally located on the network.

7. Information on battery management can found at www.oneilsoft.com under support downloads. It is advisable to write the date each battery was received on the back of each battery with a marker. When batteries are swapped between devices, or as inventory grows and ages, this information will prove invaluable.

8. Finally, if all else fails, contact the O’Neil Support Desk to verify your device is not functional and/or to obtain return shipping instructions.

MF2t Wireless Printer replaced by O'Neil Printers

The wireless MF2t printer was replaced on October 30th with a new model.  The newer MF2t printer has the wireless capabilities "built in" rather than using a PCMCIA card, that was plugged into the side.  The newer model is fully compatible with the batteries, chargers and cables of the older model.

As always, if you are unsure or require further clarification on any of the technical topics discussed... simply ASK! Remember, we are only a telephone call or email away. For our contact details, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first. News on the effects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any issues.

Quiz
Us
Here’s a question asked of our technical specialists by an O'Neil Strategic Partner during the last month. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question: I have a need to display multiple taxes that are required on the Invoice printout - and they need to be displayed as separate line items.  For example, I require:
*  A tax of 12% on the entire Invoice
*  A tax of 2% on the 12%
*  A tax of 1% on the 12%

Can you help?

Answer:  With a little workaround this can be achieved.  We have an ENDOFINV.IDI file modified to have 2 additional Surcharge Actions. So, you would simply need to enter “INVOICETAX1” and “INVOICETAX2” under the Surcharge Base Action, then enter prices for both.

In your example, the rates, will have to be the recalculated rate based on the equivalent of (12% of the invoice total x 2%), for example, 2% = .24% and 1% = .12% but you can show the rates as described by you in the descriptions, so as not to confuse the client.

Contact your local support desk to obtain a copy of the ENDOFINV.IDF if you need to show multiple invoice taxes.
