This month will forever be remembered by me as "Conference Month."  Over the last 25 days, we have either exhibited at or attended 8 industry events around the globe.

The best part of this experience is getting to meet up with so many of you.  From ARMA in Baltimore to the Australian Self-Storage Association in New Zealand, these are great opportunities to get some time to show new features, discuss future developments and talk about the records management industry in general.

All of that was a preamble to allow me to apologize for being a little late writing the newsletter. So without any further delay, here it is and, as always, I hope you enjoy this edition.

Vice President - Business Development

MOTOVATION 2007

This week I attended the Motorola MOTOVATION Enterprise Mobility Partner Conference 2007 in San Diego.  This is an invitation that I accept each year to spend time meeting with the Senior Management team at Motorola to hear about everything they are working on.  With over 400 delegates present, it is always nice to get some one-on-one time due to our long standing relationship.

Kathy Paldino, SVP & President of Motorola Enterprise Mobility, was delightful to chat with and has strong views on the importance of partnerships for the success of all of us.  I left feeling comfortable that Motorola would continue to be the mobile device supplier for O'Neil Software and would be able to help us continue to innovate in this area.

I was also interested to hear the they have now shipped over 1 million MC9000 mobile devices, which has clearly been the most popular choice of device by our customers.  As with all product sales, a successful roll out bids well for a long life, which is great news for us all.

Tip
Multiple Instances, Process Only & Multiple Monitors

This month I have 2 tips all rolled into one:

Tip 1:  In order to process your communication sessions, you have to run the processing function after you communicate your barcode scanners.  This, however, appears to take up a user license and tie up a workstation, as you have to logon to make this work.  You can get around this issue simply by running two instances of the Operations program on one workstation.  Go to:

         Administration >> Options >> Maintenance >> RSWin.ini Config

and select "Options.Multiple Instances" from the available choices.  Change the default to YES and you can now logon to Operations twice from the same workstation and, in each instance, go to different menu options.  In one instance of operations, you can now select the Process Only option and leave this running all day.

Tip 2:  Now that you have logged on twice, it is difficult to keep a watchful eye on the processing screen as you have two windows open.  Simply purchase or use a second monitor and you can have the window you are working in displayed on your primary monitor, with the processing screen displayed in the second monitor.  You can learn more about how to do this at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/northrup_multimon.mspx

Technical
Support

In the US, Daylight saving time "falls back" on November 4— Are you Ready?

The rules for DST changed this year. DST was extended by 3 weeks in the spring, and is being extended by 1 week in the fall.   If you did not address this issue in the spring it is essential to address it now.

In general, if you’re operating system is currently supported by Microsoft, appropriate updates will be made available by Microsoft. If you have Microsoft’s Automatic Update feature enabled, you will get the updates automatically. If you do not have Automatic Updates turned on and choose not to turn the feature on, you will have to manually download and apply the updates.

Finally, you can do the time adjustment directly by changing the time when the DST transition occurs; however, as an example, for Pacific time, time zone will remain “Pacific Standard Time (PST)” instead of “Pacific Daylight Time (PDT)” until the old rule for DST transition is applied three weeks later.

Quiz
Us
Here’s a question asked of our technical specialists by an O'Neil Strategic Partner during the last month. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question: I am looking at revamping our servers and will be looking to move to the next versions of server operating systems and also SQL i.e. Windows Server 2003 (although 2008 is due out early next year) and also SQL 2005

I have not done much research into how the CAL licensing has changed with SQL 2005 and just wondered what the advice would be for a company like ours, who have at present 8 concurrent RS-SQL licenses though we could do with upping that to 10 or 12 early next year.

Have Microsoft deliberately confused things so you end up buying far more Client Access Licenses' (CAL's) than you need?

Answer:  Licensing is always a sticky question, as it can be quite difficult to understand Microsoft's options, especially as they have different versions of SQL Server 2005.  A while ago we wrote an article on "Which SQL Server 2005 is Right for You" and explained some of the licensing options in that document.  You can download a copy from our resource center at:  http://www.oneilsoft.com/partners/pdf/WhichSQLServer.pdf
