What's New

Focus on Password Security in RS-SQL 3.04

With security becoming more and more of an issue, especially with internet access, a new password feature has been added to the next release of RS-SQL.  There are several system-wide options available, all of which are disabled by default, so that none of your current settings are changed. The new password policy set in Administration applies to all users, including RSWeb.NET users.  You will now be able to  set specific policies that apply to the password such as:

  • Enforce Password History: Sets how frequently old passwords can be reused.

  • Max Password Age: Determines how long users can keep a password before they have to change it.

  • Min Password Age: Determines how long users must keep a password before they can change it.

  • Min Password Length: Sets the minimum number of characters for a password.

Also, one or more of the following check boxes can be selected to require the user to create a password with at least one of the characters in the corresponding category.

  • Require Alpha: Select this check box to require that at least one character in the password is an alphabetic letter (A, B, C, a, b, c, etc.)

  • Require Numeric: Select this check box to require that at least one character in the password is numeric (0, 1, 2, etc.)

  • Require Non-Alphanumeric: Select this check box to require that at least one character in the password is non-alphanumeric (!, $, #, %)

Lockout policies and appropriate logs are also added to ensure you always remain in control.  You can download a draft copy of the release notes, which explain this feature in detail at: http://www.oneilsoft.com/partners/pdf/NEW_PasswordPolicies.pdf

Paperless records have pros, cons
The Wall Street Journal/Baltimore Sun - May 07, 2007 - Jim Stokes's financial life is practically paperless. RS-SQL
Tip
Are you using RSMobile devices and PDT3100's?  If so, you need Unified Communications and Processing.

There are two different types of processing that can be used with the old PDT3100 or the newer RSMobile scanners. There has always been what is referred to as legacy processing for use with the PDT3100 but when support was added for the RSMobile scanner, a different processing method was designed specifically for that device.

As of version 2.08, unified processing can be used for both the RSMobile scanner and the PDT3100. The unified processing feature allows data uploaded from the PDT3100 scanners to be managed and processed in the same manner as data uploaded from RSMobile.

If you are using both PDT3100 and RSMobile scanners, you may benefit from this feature.

The term legacy is used when referring to the original PDT3100 upload and processing method.   There are two system-wide RSWIN.INI settings available in Administration. The default for both settings is Yes, which means that legacy mode is in effect. To switch to unified processing, you must change the RSWIN.INI settings to No.

NOTE: All PDT3100 processing must be completed before these settings are changed.

LegacyPDT3100File
When set to Yes, which is the default setting, the behavior remains as it has previously been; tmp files are created in the common folder. When set to No, the PDT3100 files are stored in a table in the database (no tmp files are generated).

LegacyPDT3100Process
When set to No, processing is done in the RSMobile Comm Session grid along with RSMobile scanner processing.

NOTE: When LegacyPDT3100Process is set to No, all Datawand functionality is disabled throughout RS-SQL. Menu options are grayed out.
