Information

Welcome to 2006 and an exciting year it looks like being at O'Neil.  The first piece of news is that we are 25 years old.  Founded in 1981 by Tim O'Neil, the company has grown from him working alone out of his garage to where we are today, and many of you have been along for the ride from the days of RSDos.  If you have any funny stories please email them to me and I will share them with everyone in future editions of the eNewsletter.

The best news, however, is that version 2.09, which includes the RSWeb.NET Beta has been released.  Read all about both of these below.

Also don't forget to check out some important news in the Technical Section.

As always, I hope you enjoy this edition.

RS-SQL
Tip
The New Enhanced Priority Services Features gives you Total Control over agreed service levels.
You know the scenario:  For one customer you offer a one-hour delivery (only during the week) but for another customer, who is further away you can't.  To ensure your Customer Service Rep doesn't select the wrong service you use Customer Service Notes but this isn't ideal. Mistakes can happen.  You think to yourself: Wouldn't it be great if RS-SQL automatically calculated the required by Date & Time and only allowed services to be selected when available.   Great News - Now it Can !!

The Enhanced Priority Services feature in Version 2.09 allows the Required By date to automatically be calculated for priority services when creating workorders or web orders.  In order to use this feature, you must set up the company holidays and business hours for your record center.

Next, you set up each of your Enhanced Priority Services, such as a 1 Hour Rush. The options you have include:

  • You can select whether this service applies to all accounts or to an individual account.
  • You can specify the time range and how the Req'd-by Date/Time should be calculated.
  • You can specify the days of the week that the calculation is to be done.
  • You can specify whether you want to calculate the Req'd-by Date/Time from the current time or set it to a specific time.
  • You can specify how you want to handle when the calculated Req'd-by Date/Time falls on a holiday or during hours your record center is closed

PDT 3100 Support for a minimum of 5 Years

Many people have asked questions about ongoing support for the PDT3100 following discontinuation of its manufacture and sale by Symbol Technologies. You certainly have no reasons to worry as Symbol Technologies, Inc. have committed to provide service and support for products manufactured by Symbol for a period of five (5) years, commencing on the last day of the product’s final shipment. Symbol also state that they will make reasonable, commercial attempts to continue to repair products beyond the five-year period

... So your PDT3100 investment is still good for some considerable time ahead.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  RoHS Compliance and the sale of PDT 3100 Accessories

The RoHS Directive (Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances) became law in the European Union countries in February 2003. Member states must implement the law by August 2004 and product deadline for compliance is July 2006.

The purpose of the RoHS Directive is the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances and to reduce the waste management problems linked to substances likely to pose risks to health and the environment. As a result of the requirements Symbol Technologies will no longer be able to sell accessories for the PDT 3100 product line, into the European Union after 30 June 2006. Limited sales will continue in non- RoHS jurisdictions past June 2006.

As always, if you are unsure or require further clarification on any of the technical topics discussed... simply ASK! Remember, we are only a telephone call or email away. For our contact details, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first. News on the affects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any issues.

Quiz
Us
Here’s a question asked by an O'Neil Strategic Partner during the last month of our technical specialists. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question:  When working in a results grid I get frustrated that I have to move my mouse down to the bottom of the screen to click on one of the options.  Surely there is a better way?

Answer: And surely there is.  In fact there are two ways to make a selection:  Firstly you can use the right-mouse click and a menu will drop down right where you are, so you can select the option you want.  Secondly, if you don't use the mouse, you can press Alt + the letter underlined.  This will also activate that option.

Don't Copy - Be Creative
With so many web pages and brochures available it is easy to be lazy and uncreative and simply copy a competitors content.  This may seem like a great idea but its clearly a bad approach.  It shows lack of imagination and gives the original designer plenty of opportunities to use this against you.  With great tools, fabulous ideas and your entrepreneurial flair, this is a great way to show how you are different and why companies should use you not your competitors.  Go on, I dare you - Be Creative.
