  February 2005 - Issue 50

We've made it to 50 issues of the newsletter, in various formats over the years.  I hope that the newsletter continues to provide at least one piece of useful information each month and thank you for all the kind comments I have received.

This  month I've focused on the latest release of RS-SQL, version 2.07. You can learn all about it below and also check some of the import pre-upgrade steps in the technical section.

Can you believe it was 12 months ago when we held our last Strategic

Partner Conference?  I certainly can't but I am busy preparing for the next one.  If you wish to be a speaker, this is the last time to volunteer so take a read of the latest information in calendar section below.

As always, we hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter.

Ian Thomas,

Vice President - Business Development

RS-SQL VERSION 2.07 RELEASED

Straight after the January newsletter, I was informed that RS-SQL version 2.07 had indeed been released, so lets give you some more details about this new release.  You can click any of the highlighted words to learn more:

  • The introduction of the new PPT8846 another RSMobile enabled hand-held. With the new RSMobile software gaining popularity it is great to be able to introduce much of the functionality at a more affordable price that is close to that of the older PDT3100.  This device offer so much more, however, with signature capture, wireless connectivity and the easy to use RSMobile interface.

  •

  • The new Reporting Services productivity and trend reports seem to have got many customers excited.  The samples I showed in the last newsletter were  Driver Productivity, Warehouseman Productivity, Inventory Trend and Revenue Trend.  Thank you to all of you who have emailed us with suggestions for more reports.  This is an exciting new addition to RS-SQL.

  •

  • Improved PDT3100 communications now give you the option for instant database updates eliminating the traditional use temporary files.  This is a major improvement in PDT3100 processing building on lessons learnt from our RSMobile development.  It is also a step towards a future release of RS-SQL where the PDT3100 and RSMobile communications will be merged into one area of the software.

  •

  • With so many of you now running "dongle-less", using the virtual key, we wanted to give you the ability to view your licensing information. Dongle-less offers many benefits, not least the ability to run a "hot backup" site without any licensing implications and the elimination of the need to logon to the database via the master workstation every 3 days.  If you haven't made the switch yet, call us today.

  •

  • Also RSMobile licenses are now completely transferable across RSMobile enabled hand-helds.  This means if you damage one hand-held you can simply transfer the license to a new hand-held even if it is not the same device.  This protects your investment in the RSMobile software

  •

  • Finally there is a lot of "behind the scenes" work preparing for the new RSWeb.NET... Can I say any more?... Not yet but we are working  hard towards this exciting new release so watch this space for details

You can learn more about this release and ensure you receive your copy by contacting your Business Development or Support Representative. Further details regarding this upgrade can also be found at http://www.oneilsoft.com/partners/pdf/ds0016i-RS-SQL2-07.pdf

RS SQL Tip of the Month

DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A LIST

The function allows you to load items onto a grid and save them. You can then load them again and the format matches the current grid format. You may also load a list from an ASCII file. You may compare two lists and load all matching items or all items that don’t match. Each grid where Lists is available shows a menu item called List. The options in this menu are: Load, Save, Load from File, Save to File, Load Similarities, Load Differences, and Exceptions.

So how can Lists help you?  Here are some examples:

Create a list of all containers picked up from one customer in a day. Save it and compare it to a list of containers scanned onto shelves for that customer on the same day. Load the differences to ensure that they were all put away and charged for.

Your customer gives you an ASCII list of containers that you are to pick up. Compare it to the list of containers that you actually did pick up that day and load the differences. You can work out any variances with your customers right away.

Create a list of containers to be destroyed this month for a customer, then compare it to a list of their containers that had activity the previous month. Load the Similarities from both lists and let the customer know that those containers are still active.

Have fun and remember... keep a list.

Technical Support

PREPARE FOR YOUR RS-SQL 2.07 UPGRADE
To ensure a smooth and successful transition to version 2.07, the following steps are just some of the significant steps that will need to be accomplished:

  • Upgrade all RSMobile™ Hand-Helds to the Windows Mobile 2003 Operating System.  If you are running Pocket PC 2002 contact O'Neil Software for your FREE upgrade

  • Backup your database before and after upgrading.

  • Install Macromedia Flash Player if using RSWeb

  • Note that to print to a wireless printer from an RSMobile Scanner there has been some changes.  For more information, see your RSMobile User’s Guide.

  • Install the latest SQL Server Service Pack, as outlined in the RS-SQL Installation CD.

  • Contact Technical Support if you are currently using custom software developed by O’Neil. The software shipped on the RS-SQL CD for this new release contains ONLY STANDARD RS-SQL software.  DO NOT install if you are currently using custom software.

FINALLY, READ THE COMPLETE RELEASE NOTES PROVIDED WITH YOU UPDATED CD

As always, if you are unsure or require further clarification on any of the technical topics discussed... simply ASK!  Remember, we are only a telephone call or email away.  For our contact details, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first.  News on the affects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any known issues.

Ask a Question...

Here’s a question asked by an O'Neil Strategic Partner during the last month on the RS-SQL User Group Forum with the answer supplied by our Australasia support team. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question:
My company is currently using Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server with Citrix Metaframe 1.8 to access our O'Neil application. We are planning to replace/upgrade this server in the next few weeks and I just wanted to pose a question to you guys before I started putting together a quote for my boss. Here goes. In an effort to save a bit of cash, I was wondering if I could just utilize Windows Server 2003's Terminal Services to run O'Neil

Answer:   Both Citrix Metaframe and Terminal Services (TS) software applications allow the user to run a remote Windows desktop locally. In earlier versions of TS the main drawback was that there was an inability to map communications ports. Citrix had this ability, so this enabled clients using Citrix to download PDTs from their remotes site. Other reasons why Citrix Metaframe was perceived as more desirable included:

  • The Citrix client was faster and more efficient than the TS RDP client

  • Citrix "auto-detected" accessible printers. TS did not.

  • Citrix made accessible the serial ports of the client workstation. TS could not.

  • Better use of available Bandwidth.

With the advent of Windows 2003 Server these shortcomings in the Microsoft product have been resolved (however, our experience has been that com port mapping and PDT downloads/uploads are still very poor unless the bandwidth is approaching LAN speed!) This does not mean that Terminal Services for Windows Server 2003 is equal or superior to Citrix Metaframe.  In fact for medium-large size operations that can benefit from Server Farms and features such as Load balancing then Citrix may well still be superior. However for small-medium operations, a simple cost vs. benefit analysis of Citrix Metaframe and Microsoft Terminal Services may indicate an advantage to TS.
