August 2004 - Issue 44

During the last few weeks I have had the great pleasure of flying around to meet up with so many of you.  I am very excited so see that there are so many people who are pushing the software to new limits and who are eagerly awaiting future software developments but one message came through clearly... keep us updated and informed.

It is with this message clearly resonating that I am delighted to be able to launch our new website at www.oneilsoft.com with improved navigation and lots of additional information.  See the Spotlight section below for details.

We have also included in this news letter and important message regarding Windows XP service pack 2 in our technical section.

Finally, if you are heading to Barcelona, Spain for the PRISM Business Across Borders Conference be sure to stop by our booth and take a look at RSMobile, our latest software offering, in action.

As always, we hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter..

SPOTLIGHT

www.oneilsoft.com

As you are becoming more responsive to your customers' needs, many of you have asked for easier access to more information.  The design of our new web site is all about making it easier to find out about our software solutions, each of our product lines and, of course, technical support services. I would like to pass on a special thanks to three of the sales & marketing team, who worked tirelessly to make this new design available:  Erick Aguinaldo (technical sales), Christine Spisto (marketing manager) and our outgoing Queen of Marketing, Anne Edmondson who played a crucial role during the initial design stages.  There are many areas of the site where we will be adding new information so make a point of visiting regularly and start today by visiting

What's New in the Industry...
THE INDUSTRY LISTSERVERS

Many of you call me to ask how I keep abreast of what is going on in the industry.  Apart from the things you tell me there are several great resources that no commercial record center should be without. This newsletter is an obvious resource but another is known as ListServers.  These are email discussion groups between like minded individuals and there are a couple that make interesting reading. So what or where are they?

1.  PRISM International LISTS

If you are a member of PRISM, there are 3 new lists vault-l, destruction-l and recordcenter-l.
You can subscribe to all, one, two or none at all.

To subscribe send an email to listserv@prism-online.org with the body "subscribe listname" (where listname is the name of the list).
So to subscribe to every list the email body would be

subscribe recordcenter-l

subscribe vault-l

subscribe destruction-l

2.  Archives of RECMGMT-L@LISTS.UFL.EDU

This is an interesting list as it is primarily where the users of commercial record centers swap ideas or discuss their ideas of what commercial record centers should offer.  The archives are located at http://lists.ufl.edu/archives/recmgmt-l.html  To subscribe, send an email to LISTSERV@LISTS.UFL.EDU with the body of the email "subscribe recmgmt-l".  Be warned, there are some strong opinions expressed in this forum and not are all necessarily accurate... but it does make fun reading.back to top

RS-SQL Tip of the Month

AN OLD RSWin TIP THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

There are a lot of great tips that are still around from the older RSWin software days.  I always liked this one...

From the Container, Filefolder, or Tape grids the ALT+Shift+E keys on your keyboard open a blank edit screen. Simply enter the barcode number and hit the TAB key and RS-SQL will display all fields with the data enteredback to top

Technical Support Assistance and Information...

IMPORTANT - Windows XP Service Pack 2 UPDATE
Microsoft continually works to improve its software. As part of this effort, they develop updates and fixes to recognized issues and release them for use by customers. On a regular basis, they combine many of these fixes into a single package and make the package available for customers to install on their computers. These packages are called Service Packs. Available soon, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will bring users the latest security updates and innovations from Microsoft. It will establish stronger security settings that help defend against viruses, hackers, and worms and will provide unique new security features designed to make it easier for you to protect your PC... but be warned -

Service Packs can fundamentally change the operating system that other software products, such as RS-SQL, RSWeb and other critical business applications, rely on.

Since SP2 has not been officially released yet, we have not spent a lot of time testing.  This is because the beta version we have may be neither stable nor feature complete. Once it is officially released, we will systematically and gradually begin the upgrade process internally. Even for us, RS-SQL is not our only concern. All the applications that we run internally are potentially at issue.

Our recommendation to you remains, even if our initial testing reveals no problems, avoid being an early adopter if you can. Again, what about those other applications that you run? Stay attuned to the industry feedback, which we will share via this newsletter. When the reports are good, then proceed to upgrade in a deliberate and cautious manner. This means having a fallback position. As we know, removing a service patch can be problematic.

Ask a Geek... We got 'em so why not ask 'em...

Here’s a question asked by an O'Neil Strategic Partner during the last month of our technical specialists. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?

Question:
I am really excited about the wireless capabilities of the PDT8146 but have heard that the battery life is not as long as the PDT3100.  If that's true, what can I do to ensure that I get maximum use from this device?

Answer:   We have discovered that the PDT8146 battery life is less than a shift if used heavily so simply carrying a spare battery and using a Compact Flash storage card are things that we strongly recommend. However, we are also finding that some record centers who have reported poor battery life have not done everything they can to get the most from the battery. For example charging for 12 hours for the initial charge is very important. Also, we are finding that the employees are often using other programs on the PDT. Many of these are battery sappers, using the backlight heavily. If your employees insist that they are not doing this, we can give advice on how to see what programs employees have been using on the PDT. Finally, we are currently investigating a different batter supplier who has a battery described as made for a 10 hour shift. Once we have completed testing we will update you.
