 O'Neil Software - Monthly Newsletter

Latest News... Hints & Tips... Great Links...

  Issue 11- October 2001

Welcome to the place where you can find out everything that is happening at O’Neil Software.  We are especially excited about this edition of the newsletter because we are very proud to be launching our new, updated web site at www.oneilsoft.com. Designed  after long discussions with our customers this web site will be updated regularly to provide you with a great source of information and assistance.  Please accept our initial apologies as there will be some disruption to our web service during the coming week, as we change servers, but we are sure you will be pleased with the results. You can read more about this in our What’s New section.

For the first time we also have a version of this newsletter in full HTML format, which will provide you with a document that is easier to read, quicker to navigate and prints in a more presentable manner.  In this format, you can simply click on the menu item in the index to go straight to that section making it quicker for you to access only the information sections that interest you.  So how can you view this newsletter in that format?  Simply visit www.oneilsoft.com and look under latest news.

Whichever format you chose to read this, don’t forget to take a look in section 6 – other Useful Information, to get several FREE downloads that will help you get the best from our web site and others and, finally, check the 2001/2002 show guide to see all the venues where you can meet up with us over the next 12 months.  We will be in New York between October 23-25th at the Financial Technology Expo and, if you want to meet us, you can log on to the exhibitors web site to get a FREE exhibit hall pass.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and the web site. If this newsletter has reached you in error and you do not wish to receive further editions then simply click on the link and send the email that is created: <mailto: newsletter@oneiluk.com?subject=unsubscribe>   Mailings to you may currently be in progress, so please allow 36 hours for your updated preferences to take full effect.

1.   What's New...

O'Neil Software launches new web site

This year has been one of constant change at O'Neil Software as we continue to focus on providing you with the highest levels of customer care.  We started by introducing this email newsletter in December 2000, to provide you with information from within O'Neil in a timely manner.  We want you to know how we are working to serve you better and also to provide a convenient and simple method of getting that information to you.  With over 2000 newsletters emailed each month, this has proven more popular than we ever imagined.  This, however, is just a way of getting brief details of changes to you quickly.  We still want to provide you with more information and quicker ways of getting it and have been working on making www.oneilsoft.com the source of that information.

The new site is split into several key sections to make it simple to navigate and easy to get the information you need, when you need it.  From the Home Page and every subsequent page you can select the following:

  • New Customers

  • Existing Customers - Our Strategic Partners

  • Latest News

  • Company Information

  • Site Search

So what can you find in each section?

1.  New Customers - is designed for people looking at Records Management or O'Neil Software for the first time.  It provides details from our FREE booklet (Getting Started in Records Management) and also addresses many of the myths that are commonly told about O'Neil and its leading product - RS-SQL.

2.  Strategic Partners - is designed for our customers who are using the product on a daily basis.  We wanted to create an area where you can obtain answers to questions that you are asked by your customers.  If in a Request for Information, you are asked about the handheld device you use, simply cut & paste the text directly from the Hardware section.  What about RS-Web?  All the details are here in a simple to read and easy to copy format. You'll find the latest training dates from the O'Neil University and a great new section for marketing support among others.

3.  Latest News - is where you can stay up-to-date on all the news at O'Neil Software.  Missed your last edition of the Strategic Partner Magazine?  Don't worry.... You can download the magazine in PDF format here.  Want to see recent articles published about O'Neil Software or its customers, then check out the Articles section.  If you have had an article published and would like to see it here, simply email details to Anne Edmondson at oneilnj@msn.com.   You will also find all the Press Releases, email newsletters and technical newsletters from the last 12 months.

4.  Company Information - is where you can find our contact details and the names of our customer facing staff.  I was amazed by the size of the global Support, Training & Business Development team that is available to help you.  Everyone's email address is listed here so you can contact them directly.

5.  Site Search - this is a great new feature to help you get the best from the site.  Accessed from the home page or the bottom of every page, simply type in a search if you cannot find the information you want immediately and our search engine will identify all relevant pages.  For our Strategic Partners, there is a more advanced search that can be accessed through the Technical Support/Answer Book section, which will give on-line access to more key documents to help answer your questions.

This is just the start.  We want you to be more than a simple user of O'Neil Software's products.  We want you to become an O'Neil Strategic Partner helping us through your feedback to make this site a source of valuable information and downloads for staff training, cost cutting or winning new business.  Let us know what you think and what you would like to see added to the site over the coming months by emailing Anne Edmondson at oneilnj@msn.com.  Every idea will be put into a monthly draw for a gift from O'Neil Software for your contribution.

Finally, we would like to express our most sincere thanks to John Burton (graphic designer) and the incredibly dedicated web team of David and Kristen at WhyByte.com who have worked so closely with us to create such a great site.  You can let them know what you think of the site via email at David@WhyByte.com.

2.   Did you know...

...The new web site – www.oneilsoft.com - contains over 400  not previously available documents, for you to freely reference.  With hundreds of hours of development, this site has sections specifically designed for you to cut & paste information saving many hours when responding to Requests for information.

3.   O'Neil Software Hints & Tips – RSWin & RS-SQL Users

Do you want to carry out a sales demonstration of RSWin or RS-SQL to your customer or prospect but are nervous that you may not have the necessary hands-on experience to make it look slick?  Or maybe you don't want to load a separate version of RS-SQL or RSWin on your laptop?

Don’t worry.  You can now download a Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 show that will guide you through any presentation smoothly and professionally.  The presentation walks you through the typical features of RS-SQL/RSWin so you can explain how the system ensures 100% accuracy in tracking and billing storage and activity.  Even better, the presentation is easy to amend so you can add your own logos and slides about your business and what you have to offer.  Simply visit www.oneilsoft.com and look under Strategic Partners/Software for the Download Demo option.

We have already had several great success stories from people using this presentation.  Share them with us by clicking on the following link SUCCESS STORIES and we will respond with a gift to help you celebrate your successes.

4.   O'Neil Software Hints & Tips - RS-SQL Users Only

Want to show customers and prospects how you use RS-SQL?  If you visit www.oneilsoft.com and visit the Strategic Partners section you will find lots of useful information but take a moment to look in Marketing Support.  In this section we created some artwork to show the processes of pickup and delivery.  Place these in the appendices of your next Request for Information and show people how you use the point-to-point tracking of RS-SQL.

5.   Windows - Tips & Tricks

Cut & Paste from HTML pages on our web site

As explained, we designed many parts of the new web site so that you can easily get information to help you complete requests for information but how easy is it to do this?  Simply highlight the text on the web site that you wish to use in your document and right mouse click.  A pop-up menu will allow you to copy the text highlighted.  All you need to do now is to go back to the document you are typing and right mouse click again.  This time select paste from the pop up menu and the text will all be copied for you.  You can now make any minor amendments to help you produce that perfect response.

eNotes - A useful cut & paste tool

In our July Issue of the Newsletter we introduced eNOTES.  With the introduction of the new web site, this simple tool could now be more useful than ever. eNotes™ (patent pending) is a FREE enhancement for Microsoft's Internet Explorer provided by R.J. Schmonsees & Associates. It adds an intelligent "cut and paste" capability that gives you a simpler, faster, and more effective way to gather information from the web. Simply highlight anything that interests you and eNotes automatically captures and organizes it in your own personalized Knowledge Cart™. Get your FREE copy from   www.my-enotes.com/

Adobe Acrobat Reader - The ESSENTIAL internet tool

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express Upgrades

To experience the web site and this and other HTML Newsletters at their best, make sure that you are using the latest version of your browser and email software.  If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, there are a series of FREE upgrades.  You can make your choice from the list below:

NEW - Internet Explorer 6

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp

Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie55sp2/default.asp

Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie501sp2/default.asp

Note: Any of these releases will help provide protection against the recent internet virus, called W32/Nimda@MM.  Anti-virus vendors are currently developing updated scanning tools that will detect and disarm mails sent by the virus. But even in the absence of these tools, patches and updated versions of IE have been available for some time to eliminate the vulnerability. Customers who have installed any of the above updates should not be at risk of infection by email.

Microsoft Office - Viewers & Converters

You don’t have Microsoft Office but you want to see the PowerPoint presentation or Word Document on our web site?  Not a problem because Microsoft provides FREE Office Converters and Viewers.  With the help of these converters and viewers from the Office Download Centre, you can view Microsoft Office files that were created with versions of Office programs different from your own, or even if you don't have Office at all.

Converters enable you to open files created by people using different versions of your Office programs. Find the appropriate converter for the version of the Office program on your computer.

Viewers enable people who don't have Office programs to see your work. Simply provide them with the appropriate viewer along with your files.

To find the viewers and converters you need, simply visit http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.htm and select the program for the file you want to view

7.   Technical Support & Updates

PDT power loss - Some advice...

In recent months we have received a number of PDT's back for repair which simply will not power on even with a new battery installed.  Before reaching for the phone try the following procedure:

1. Check that both the connector at the base of the PDT (RJ-41) and the connector within the cradle are free from grit and dust.  Most common charging problems are a result of a poor connection between these 2 components.

2. Insert the PDT into a powered cradle and press and hold the PWR (power) button.  Hold the PWR button for 30 seconds, release the PWR button and then press the button repeatedly approximately 4 times.

3. If the PDT show signs of life leave it in the cradle until the charging light has stopped flashing.

4. If the PDT fails to power on, repeat steps 1 and 2.  If there is no life after 2 attempts please return your PDT for repair.

Did you know? -

1. A PDT battery is usually fully charged in approximately 90 minutes?

2. Optimum charging occurs at room temperature (between 20C-25C or 75-95F). Above or below that range, batteries may not charge to rated capacity.

WINDOWS XP – Coming to a PC near you SOON!

Early indications are that all is well with Windows XP but if you plan to be one of the early adopters of the new Windows XP operating system, please let us know.  We will need to continue testing of RS-SQL on this new platform and would like to ensure that we work with you so that you get the best out of both software packages.  Contact your support representative if you intend to upgrade to Windows XP this year.

-----

ARE YOU ON THE LATEST VERSION OF RSWIN?

The most up-to-date version of RSWin is 3.07.  If you are running RSWin but are not on this release, please contact your Business Development Representative to discuss how you may be eligible for a FREE upgrade.  Simply select HELP and ABOUT from any menu to check your software's version number.

-----

PLEASE NOTE:  Before loading any service packs, check with your O'Neil support representative first.  News on the affects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any known problems.

9.   And Finally, a thought for the month...

We thought that this summed up the reason for the introduction of the new web site rather well...

"Organizations exist for only one purpose: to help people reach ends together that they could not achieve individually."
