I'm just back from a series of travels and that resulted in no
newsletter for October. I figured that I could
just sneak by for one month without you noticing.
I figured wrong! Now I do have a somewhat genuine
excuse. While visiting our Australian my trusty
old laptop (and those who had seen it know how old it
was) finally decided to go visit all the other old
laptops in the blue screen of death. My draft
newsletter went with it and so I shall start again with
a double effort this month.
As such, there is lots of Conference News, Version 4.0
News and Industry News.
As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of the
eNewsletter from O'Neil Software

2010 Strategic Partner Conference -
Registration is now Open
We can't believe how many of you have pushed us to open
the registration early for the 2010 Strategic Partner
Conference. We want to thank you because early
registration really helps us with
the planning stages. As such, we have decided to
keep the early registration prices to the same as 2008,
with a small increase for late registrants. So
don't delay. Write the date in your calendar and book
early for the not-to-be missed event of 2010.

O'Neil Software Partners with
Orange County Ronald McDonald House
Okay...you've all been
wondering and clamoring for
the information. So the
time has finally come to
announce the children's
charity that we will be
sponsoring at the O'Neil
Software Strategic Partner
Conference in April 2010.
The charity we've selected
is the
Orange County (OC) Ronald
McDonald House, located
only a few blocks from
Children's Hospital of Orange
County, California (CHOC)
and other pediatric
hospitals and medical
facilities in the area. The
idea behind the Ronald
McDonald House is simple:
provide a comfortable and
affordable “home away from
home” for families
shouldering the burdens
associated with a child, who
is being treated for a
serious illness at a nearby
hospital. Our goal is to
help this caring,
compassionate and charitable
organization lift some of
the heavy financial burden
on families, who already
struggle with so many
concerns and fears.

RS-SQL Version 4.0 receives
Windows 7 Compatibility Certification.
Nowadays,
the economy and market conditions aren’t the only things
subject to change. Computer hardware and software are
changing as well. This is precisely why O’Neil Software
is constantly monitoring technology on behalf of their
customers, whose investments stand to be impacted. With
that in mind, the company recently announced that their
world renowned records management software, RS-SQL®, is
now Microsoft Windows 7 Compatible, offering their
customers enhanced security, innovative user interface
features and reliability improvements.

RS-SQL Version 4.0 -
Readiness Check - Coming Soon.
RS-SQL version
4.0 will come with a new program designed to ensure you
are ready to upgrade. Known as the Readiness
Check program, it will be available on the RS-SQL
installation CD in the folder with the same name.
You should run this program prior to upgrading your
database to RS-SQL version 4.0.
So what will it do for you?
The program examines your RS-SQL
database, looking for unexpected objects that might interfere with the
RS-SQL 4.0 database upgrade. The Readiness Check program will
also check for and report on SQL Server 2000 presence, and inform you of the
RS-SQL 4.0 requirement for SQL Server 2005 or later.
RS-SQL Version 4.0 -
The Platform for the Future.
RS-SQL version
4.0 is built to run on the latest offerings from
Microsoft and the hardware world: 64-Bit
computing, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and SQL
Server 2008.
As Microsoft is now stopping
support, we will also be retiring some of these older operating systems and
SQL Server versions with the introduction of RS-SQL Version 4.0

Why a stored procedure is not the API
During the examination of a recent support issue a customer misunderstanding about what actually is the API has come to light. We found, in this particular example, that portions of our code (known as the stored procedures) are being used on their own to insert records into a database. I shall do my best to explain why this is bad, without too many technical terms:

Quiz

This
month we look at another question that our support team
was asked. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?
Question: I read
of the security breach where accounts and passwords were
found on a public site listed the usernames and
passwords of some 10,000 users. What steps can I take to
avoid this with my RSWeb and RS-SQL passwords?
