What's New at O'Neil |
 |
|
Did You Notice Something Different?
I am sure that, by now, you noticed that the O'Neil
Software website has had a major overhaul. Over the last
few months we have been quietly building a new set of
foundations so we can deliver content to you in a more
organized format. We received lots of compliments for our
previous website but we knew we could do better. This is
our 4th version over the last 12 years, and capitalizes on
some great new technology.

Strategic Partner Conference 2010
It's exciting to learn that so many of you are already
asking about our next Strategic Partner Conference.
For the uninitiated, the conference is held every 18
months and provides an unprecedented opportunity to
network with other users of O'Neil Software, the support
team and members of our development group.
We are just in the process of setting
the location but, if you want to pencil something into
your diaries, we are looking at the the third week of
April, 2010. I should have more information by the
next newsletter but, in the meantime, take a look at the
previous conferences at:

Barcode Label Survey 2009
As we recognize the 35th birthday of the barcode, we are
working on enhancing our barcode label offering and
thought it would be wise to solicit input from you.
Consequently, we would like to invite you to participate
in a survey that addresses various factors including
overall value, lead-time, quality, short run quantities,
color and other elements that may be important. This
survey is designed to receive input from those of you who
are presently buying barcode labels from us, but also
those who are subcontracting to a third party provider or
printing your own in house.
We know your time is
valuable, so we will be giving away a total of four (4)
$150 gift certificates to randomly chosen participants. To
be eligible for a gift certificate, simply add your
contact information at the end of the survey. We will only
use it for this purpose.
That's it... ready to participate? Just click the
link below:

RS-SQL Version 4.0 - Expected in Q4 of 2009
Over the last few months, I have discussed the next
release with so many people with much excitement and enthusiasm.
This is because it will be our first, fully compliant
Unicode version. What does that mean? Simply,
we are standardizing the entire product allowing us to
better serve our entire customer base with improved
language support.
This release, however, goes much
further than that. Not only will it contain some
exciting new functionality but the introduction of the
complete Unicode compliance will allow for better software
integration, which fits in with our development strategy,
explained at the last Strategic Partner Conference.

A Bar Code History: The People Behind Its Success
AIIM Connections, July
15, 2009
-- The much publicized 35th "birthday" of the bar code is
certainly a noteworthy milestone. By now, most people have
seen dozens of articles about the technology's creation
and growth. And most have seen the names Joseph Woodland
and Bernard Silver as the "fathers" of bar codes. And some
may even know the name George J. Laurer as the leader of
the IBM team that developed the symbology that became the
U.P.C. symbol in use so widely today. But bar code
technology also owes its success to a handful of visionary
individuals and companies that looked beyond U.P.C. and
created the technology as we know it today.

Support
Extended for RS-SQL 3.07
As you know,
earlier this year we announced the end of support for
SQL Server 2000 commencing with all RS-SQL releases
after March 2010.
In developing our next release of RS-SQL
(to be known as version 4.0) we have found that there are
many issues that are handled seamlessly with SQL Server
2005 or SQL Server 2008, but with SQL Server 2000 we could
encounter problems. Clearly, that's not something we want
to do!

Windows 7
and the European Commission
I have been getting some questions
about the news regarding how Microsoft will be shipping
Windows 7 without Internet Explorer in Europe.
If you have any questions about this,
you can read
this post on the Microsoft on the Issues Blog. This
post is pretty thorough in explaining their plans for
Windows 7 in Europe. The European Commission has
also posted a statement which can be read
here.
This is important as RSWeb.NET is only supported on
Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, so our European
customers should be ensuring that their customers are
aware that we will need them to install IE7 or IE8 if
they move to Windows 7.
RS-SQL

to download the updates.

Quiz
Us |
 |
In this
months question we look at a particular area of setup,
after a suggestion by Jason Belnap of Filecenter, Inc in
Salt lake City, UT. Why not test your knowledge by seeing if you know the answer?
Question: Hey
Ian, I would like to suggest you go over the
OPTIONS.WORKORDERPICKUPRECEIVECHARGES differences in the
rswin.ini configurations. I had an issue with some
containers that went out under one account and should have
come back under another but the first account got billed
for them. Now I know that I should have read the release
notes but...
Do you know what settings Jason should have used?
