I am delighted to say that after writing the newsletter
monthly for over 8 years, we have reached the dizzy
heights of our 100th edition. The newsletter was started
in December 2000 and has morphed through several
iterations over the years.
All the newsletters are still here, many minus some
graphics which have long since been removed from the
website, but still very readable and they show a
timeline of O'Neil like no other. You can read more about
the history in the one-off "In The News"
section below, which remembers some of the more
significant changes and events that the newsletter
introduced.
The rest of this commemorative edition will keep focused
on the tradition set, with the usual industry news,
Hints & Tips and Technical Support updates.
Thank you all for your support and positive feedback
from the previous 99 editions.
As always, I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. Ian Thomas
Vice President - Business Development

In The News... Looking back at over 8 Years of the
eNewsletter.
The
eNewsletter was introduced in December 2000 and has been
updating customers and friends of O'Neil Software ever
since. In that
first issue, we
introduced RS-SQL version 1.16 and two new team
members to the US technical support desk: Dan Reisman
and Mark Tipton. Well RS-SQL has moved on a long
way since then, while Dan and Mark are still here
assisting customers.
Issue 6,
saw the announcement of our first Strategic Partner
Conference, scheduled for September 20, 2001, which was
subsequently postponed due to the tragic events of 9/11.
That event made Issue 10
probably the most difficult to write, as we all tried to
focus on business as usual.
Issue 11
saw the first change to the look of the newsletter,
along with the introduction of a new website. I am
guessing the look wasn't popular as it was quickly
updated in Issue 14,
which shared the news of the introduction of RS-SQL
version 1.22.
Issue 26
eased us in 2003 with the introduction of the Strategic
Partner Magazine, as we continued to look at the best
ways to communicate with all of you. The magazine was
a glossy, quarterly aimed at getting the news to your
staff and customers.
Issue 30
saw us moving to our new and present home, at 11
Cushing, as we spread our wings and separated completely
from our sister company, O'Neil Product Development.
Issue
38 was the first of 2004 with another new look, to
keep it shorter. Twitter hadn't been thought of
yet, but you were telling us you needed news in a quick
format.
Issue
44 announce our third (and current - for now) website,
which was branded to match our datasheets and provide
simpler navigation. This brand would eventually be
used throughout O'Neil's marketing, with the very next
newsletter taking the same look and feel.
Issue
58 shared some great feedback from our 2005
Strategic Partner show and made the announcement that
our RSMobile software had won the Symbol Technologies
(now Motorola) Enterprise Mobility Award for the North
America Region.
It was only
two issues later and we announced our 25 year
anniversary in the Records Management Software Industry
and by
Issue 64, we were making the big announcement of
RS-SQL Version 3.0, which introduced the new RSWeb.NET,
amongst other features.
Issue 78
brought the news that our RSMobile solution had reached
another milestone with it's AT&T certification,
meaning you can now be connected from anywhere. Issue 90
brought us RS-SQL version 3.06 in August 2008 and the very next edition brought news of the newsletters first signs of
real competition - the blog.
The newsletter was starting to look dated, as it only
shared news in a monthly digest format. Could it
survive in this new environment?10 editions later and
the newsletter is still going strong. Distributed
to over 3800 subscribers with a monthly read rate of
23%, this is still obviously a great resource for many
of you.
With years of hints & tips, quiz us answers and other
information, it can be fun to look back at some of the
newsletters. Simply change the issue number in the
URL to pick any edition you want. Please note that
some graphics and links may be missing, or no longer
valid, in earlier editions.
Let me know if you had a particular favorite or just
want to give some feedback on your thoughts about the
future of the newsletter, with the introduction of blogs,
Twitter and Facebook pages.

Dangerous Stocks That Will Burn Investors
The Motley Fool, May 22, 2009

companies with the best competitive positions.. It's a strategy that's made him billions and one that's perfectly suited to today's market... For decades, Iron Mountain built a boring business with a huge moat -- storing records for doctors, lawyers, and anyone else who generates a lot of paper...

Which Data
Network is right for RSMobile?
Recently I have been asked a lot of questions about RSMobile and how it communicates over the cell phone data networks. This is such a great feature, allowing drivers to upload/download data from the field, or allow you carry out record center operations in a remote warehouse, including live lookups. Most of the questions, however, focus on the cell phone company that people have chosen. After all, we all have our favorite service provider so why did O'Neil choose AT&T and is that your only choice?
So let's give some background:

When is a Backup Considered Successful?
This is a great question that was posed by Stephen Bouffard in an article he recently posted at SQL Server Central (http://www.sqlservercentral.com/). Stephen highlighted several issues that we see all too frequently and has essentially created a non-technical checklist that anyone can use. I may get into trouble for copying it here, but it is such a good article I hope he won't mind me sharing it with you. Before reading the aricle, can you answer the question?
