Issue 10 September 2001

At O'Neil Software, we share with you all the sorrow and pain felt as a result of the tragic events that occurred on Tuesday, September 11th 2001. Our thoughts and prayers especially go out to those who lost friends and family members.

Below you will find details relating to the Strategic Partner Conference, which was postponed as a result of the horrific events.  We are, however, attending the ARMA conference in Montreal and will look forward to meeting many of you there.

There's some good news with the release of Version 1.19 of RS-SQL and in the technical support section we felt it would be prudent to remind all our RSWin customers of backup procedures, as the backup wizard is only supplied with RS-SQL.

WHAT'S NEW...

O'NEIL STRATEGIC PARTNER CONFERENCE

When the true extent of the recent tragedy came to light, we communicated with our customers who were to attend our Strategic Partner Conference and asked them whether we should continue. The feedback was touching and thoughtful with the majority of the 100 people scheduled to arrive requesting a postponement. To take a quote from one of our Portuguese customers:

"this Conference was prepared to run on happiness and joy... not in grief and
sorrow..."

At such a difficult time, with so much uncertainty, we decided that the only sensible and sensitive action for us to undertake would be to carry out the wishes of our customers and postpone the conference

We will refund all registration fees over the next few days and will look for a suitable date to re-schedule. At this time, we are unclear as to when that could be and will refrain from making a decision until this international situation has stabilized.

O'NEIL SOFTWARE HINTS AND TIPS - RSWIN & RS-SQL USERS

When ordering barcode labels, especially for locations, it can be difficult to write down the ranges that you require.  Did you know that the easiest way to do this is to create the locations in RSWin or RS-SQL and select the "Export to File" option from the menu. You simply need to ensure that only the location barcode is shown on the table before commencing the export. Copy the file that is created to a diskette or email it to us. We can then simply create labels from this file.

O'NEIL SOFTWARE HINTS AND TIPS - RS-SQL USERS ONLY

Do you get frustrated when carrying out large invoice runs that it takes time to Tally and Calculate but you have to do it when you are around so that the paper does not jam or run out in your printer? Well in RS-SQL, this is not necessary...

In RS-SQL, you can select a system wide option in the RSWin.ini setup to "Spool invoice printing as one job". This allows you to print invoices to a file rather than to paper.  You now never have to fear printer jams or paper running out. Invoicing can now be run over-night (remember, RS-SQL backups will still run even with a user logged in, unlike many of our competitors' systems) and when you arrive next morning, you can simply select re-print and then print them to paper.

Couple this option with Adobe Acrobat Writer (see Issue 8 - July 2001 for information on Adobe Acrobat) and you can check all your invoices before printing out a single page to paper.

WINDOWS 2000 - TIPS AND TRICKS

Personalizing your Start Menu

In Windows 2000, the Personalized Menu feature collapses the cascading menus under the Start button to show only the items you're likely to need. Windows 2000 does this by tracking the applications you've recently used or installed, and showing just them.  The others drop off the visible menu.

To access the entire contents of a menu, click the down-chevron symbol at the bottom of the list. The whole menu defaults to an alphabetical listing, with the top-level items standing proudly on buttons.

If you don't know where an item is hiding, you may want to turn off Personalized Menus and display the whole Start menu. Select Start, Settings, Taskbar & Start Menu, and under the General tab, deselect Use Personalized Menus.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE...

A new survey shows that cybersurfin' seniors are a small bunch, with only 15% of the 65 and older set being Internet-friendly. But that handful is hardcore. Nearly 70% of those grandmas and grandpas go online on a typical day. That compares to 56% of all Americans who log on. The study predicts even more seniors will get wired, a phenomenon being dubbed the "silver tsunami."

TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND UPDATES:

Another Virus Warning as the "Nimda" outbreak spreads worldwide

Known as "Nimda" or "readme.exe," this new worm spreads by sending infected e-mail messages, copying itself to computers on the same network, and compromising Web servers using Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) software. The FBI says it sees no
relationship between the online deluge and last week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but numerous companies report a wide range of worm-induced damage. Please ensure you update your Virus software to protect yourselves against this very destructive virus.

The Importance of Backups in RSWin

We are re-printing this from our June 2001/Issue 07 Newsletter as it is a very important topic, especially during these uncertain times...

Customers who have suffered data corruptions or server crashes often contact us for help. When asked if they have an available backup we usually hear "What's a backup?"  "Am I responsible for that?"  Whether it is RSWIN or RS-SQL it is essential to have a disaster recovery plans.

In order to implement an effective backup program for RSWIN the following should be accomplished.

1. Make sure your backup software targets the RSWDATA directory.  This directory usually contains your database files.  It is important to point out that the RSWDATA directory is the default installation directory for the RSWin database. It can be changed to something else. Please be sure that you are backing up the current, active database - not a test database or a version of the database that was active at one time but is now an out-of-date, unused version. Remember, for some legitimate reason, the active database may have been moved to another directory, but the backup software still points to the prior location and continues to backup the old, old-of-date copy. This one is a big pitfall that many people fall into.

2. If your are operating your entire system on one computer or a small peer-to-peer network you should also backup the RSWIN folder.  This contains the program files.

3. Lastly, be sure to backup the RSWIN.INI and BTI.INI files located in your Windows or WINNT directories.

Following the above steps should keep you reasonably safe in the event your current system should some form of corruption. Also, if using tape media to backup be sure to buy enough tapes and establish a rotation schedule.  It is also imperative to clean your tape backup device on a quarterly basis.
