O'Neil Software Hints And Tips - RSWin & RS-SQL Users

Fixing Import and Customer Transmittal Exceptions

After running an Import or Customer Transmittal, it is quite common to receive exceptions on several of the import records. Many people fix the exceptions by trawling through the original imort file (or using the Excel or Access Find function) to find the problem lines one by one, and then fix them before re-importing the whole sheet. Others will find the exceptions from the original file, selecting and copying them to another worksheet before fixing them. A simpler method is to work on the data provided by the Exception Table (Administration, Maintenance).

On receiving exceptions, go to the Exceptions table and unmark all exceptions except those relevant to this import. You can do this quickly by running a Filter on the Import File field, which is the name of your import file. Now format your columns so that only the Import Data field is displayed. From the Options menu, choose Export Table. Select the Delimited export type and change the delimiter to Comma. Choose your Export File Name and Path, and export the exception data.

You can now open this file from Excel, Access or a similar package. This file will only have the records that generated exceptions!

NEW RSWIN.INI Option to Limit Search Results

A new RSWIN.INI setting has been added to the system that will limit the search results in the Query & Post table of Workorders. The setting is found in the System-Wide options, and currently defaults to No.

Why not try setting this to Yes and you will no longer need to identify the account number in the query, that you run from the workorder Query & Post table. The only items that will appear in a result are those items that match the criteria AND belong to the workorder account, its open sub-accounts or any linked accounts.

Windows - Tips And Tricks

FAST ACCESS TO THE FIND/SEARCH WINDOW

The fastest way to bring up Find/Search Window is to click anywhere on the Desktop and then press F3. If you do this while using Explorer, Find/Search will automatically fill in the search path with the name of the folder currently open.

IS THIS THE END OF CLIPPY?

With any luck we could soon see the last of the aggravating paperclip that appears in Microsoft Office.

'Clippy', the animated office assistant, has been the subject of many a bad tempered rant as he pops up offering 'helpful' advice while you try to work. Microsoft have now promised to disable him as part of their promotion for their new Office XP suite, designed for Microsoft's forthcoming Windows XP operating system (see below). If anyone does want to have Clippy interrupt their work with unnecessary pointers, they will be able to turn him on from the Help Menu.

Microsoft has even set up a site dedicated to the downfall of Clippy. You can visit his web site at <http://www.officeclippy.com/> to take a look.

!! WARNING !! CHECK YOUR BTRIEVE FILE SIZES

AN UPDATE FROM ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS...

Over the last few months we have been warning you to check your Btrieve file sizes. There are 57 Btrieve files (ending with the file extension *.BTR) and individually they must remain below 3.5 GB. Here is some more information on the subject from one of our Strategic Partners who wanted to pass on his experience...

“...Most importantly a table can only hold 16,777,216 pages to a data file. To check this you can use the File manager in the Btrieve Technologies folder on any desktop. I know this because we reached the limits of a Btrieve table.”

Philip Britton

Application Support Analyst

Allied Pickfords, UK

Thanks Phil. I am sure all the RSWin users will appreciate you taking the time to pass on your comments and we will continue with this subject in the next release of the technical newsletter. If you do not receive the quarterly technical newsletter, please contact Alyson Murray by email at <mailto:Alyson.Murray@oneilinc.com?subject=Tech_Newsletter> and she will be glad to add you to our mailing list

PLEASE NOTE: Before loading any service packs or upgrades, check with your O'Neil support representative first. News on the affects of loading a service pack is received all of the time and they will be able to advise you of any known problems.
