Want a suggestion for a great New Year’s resolution? How about this? Resolve to review your RS-SQL database maintenance and disaster recovery plans as early as possible this year. Without exception, companies who wait for disaster to strike before reviewing their backup procedures are caught between a rock and a hard place, often losing data and more than half going out of business within three years. Some good information on maintaining your database can be found at the following links:

Very basic explanation of how to manually execute a backup or restore process in SQL 2005:

Please note that O’Neil recommends a database backup using full recovery model be run at least daily/nightly and that transaction log backups be run throughout the day at intervals equal to your tolerance for data loss. Transaction log backups allow for “point in time” restore of a database, restoring it to an exact point in time.

A good example of how this was a life saver for one O’Neil Strategic Partner was a call to our US support desk saying that a temporary data entry person had just deleted the record center’s major account and its entire inventory. The temp thought they were just clearing the grid! In addition to educating this record center manager on Function Access restrictions that eliminate the possibility of this occurring, the O’Neil support team assisted with a point in time restore that restored the database to the state it was in immediately before the deletion took place. No work was lost. Now, that’s the power of a good backup plan.

Don’t forget that the O’Neil Maintenance Wizard and Backup Reminder can help you create your backup jobs with the tick of a few options. You then transfer the backup files from the server hard drive to tape and store them offsite. The RS-SQL Backup Reminder can be put in the Startup group of any pc that is booted daily to give an easily understood display of the backup status. Green lights mean all is well, yellow lights indicate a warning and a red light indicates a problem that should be reported to IT immediately. As you can see from the screen capture below, red lights indicate that our backups have not been running and a green light shows that there is sufficient disk space to perform the backup.

If you haven’t done so already, contact your O’Neil Support Desk for information on how to use the RS-SQL Maintenance Wizard and Backup Reminder as part of your database maintenance and disaster recovery plan.
