They teamed up on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina in Newport Beach, California to end a shameful, unthinkable childhood hunger here in America and abroad. 

“Every 18 months, when our company hosts our Strategic Partner Conference for our customers and vendors, we build our Record Center Challenge around a deserving charity,” notes Ian Thomas, VP of Business Development for O’Neil.   “At our 2007 conference, O’Neil’s attendees built bikes to be donated to a children’s charity.  This year’s team-building events/contests and a silent auction centered around under-privileged children again, in hopes of doing our part to help Share Our Strength end childhood hunger.  Conference sponsors, attendees,  strategic partner and business vendors helped raise $23,006.81 – all of which will go to the charity.  We so admire the dedication and work that Bill Shore, Founder and Executive Director and Debbie Shore, Co-Founder and Associate Director are doing towards this effort and outcome.”

The Invisible Hunger

The charity describes it as “The Invisible Hunger,” invading our schools, preying on children, destroying families and tearing communities apart.  You can’t see it by looking.  The victims are black, white, Asian and Hispanic. 

The problem?  Limited access to the nutritious food children need to develop to their full potential.  Without it on a regular basis, kids suffer lifelong consequences such as poor health and weak immune systems; stomachaches, headaches, colds, ear infections, fatigue, hospitalizations; behavior difficulties and impaired performance in schools,  academically, athletically and socially.

Family poverty is the most universal cause of hunger.  Faced with this problem, they are constantly forced to trade one necessity for another: cupboards filled with healthy foods for rent, utilities, transportation and healthcare. Their neighborhood stores aren’t stocked with fresh foods at affordable prices.  And many families have limited knowledge of the food and nutritional programs available to them.
