O'Neil UniversityWhile visiting our UK office it is clear to see that the big R word (recession to you and me) is mentioned a lot more in magazines and the newspapers than back in the US. I am not sure exactly why, but one thing I did notice is that it has generated a large amount of booklets on managing your business through difficult times.

From local newspapers to chamber of commerce brochures, the theme is very much the same. You must take a proactive approach to management and look closely at areas you may have previously ignored. Last evening, I had time to read through many of the booklets I had picked up and, amongst the usual suggestions, there was one I didn't expect to see: Invest in Training.

Now I have always been a big advocate of training, so I was interested to see why this particular subject was included alongside the usual suggestions, such as managing your cash-flow. The logic, in fact, was simple: In difficult times you need to maximize all of your investments.

So why training? When companies initially purchase software tools they often do so to reap rewards of greater automation and time saving, but often don't realize all of those rewards. The reason is usually down to a lack of investment in training. Now is the time to gain those advantages and also give confidence to your customers and staff. The consensus was that the trainining investment will be paid back quickly as new features are introduced.

I couldn't agree more. For example, if you are using an older version of O'Neil Software's RS-SQL (the current version is 3.07) the upgrade is free. All you need to do is learn how to use the new features so you can do more with less. That's good advice.

Google leading the way with their OS announcement... or not? Print E-mail

chrome-explorerNot really something that I believe will affect us (at least in the short-term) but something I did find interesting.

Earlier this week Google announced their plan for a new Operating System (OS) for PC's. Here's what Google says: "Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks" and "most of the user experience takes place on the web." Groundbreaking stuff, eh? Or maybe not...

Back in February, Microsoft quietly made a similar announcement entitled "The Multi-Principal OS Construction of the Gazelle Web Browser". Within that statement you will read that "Gazelle, a secure web browser [will be] constructed as a multi-principal OS" and "Our prototype implementation and evaluation experience indicates that it is realistic to turn an existing browser into a multi-principal OS that yields significantly stronger security and robustness with acceptable performance and backward compatibility."

So it looks to me as if both these big guys are heading in the same direction and actually Google are reacting to Microsoft's moves rather than the other way around?  Nevertheless, I don't think I will be removing Microsoft Windows from my PC any time soon.
