certifiedAs we talk internally about completing the 2010 Classroom training schedule it raises a question in my mind:  What should we do different to make training better, easier, cheaper and more effective?  Over the years we have tried different formats, many of which have endured right up to today, but is is time for something new?

Looking at software companies much larger than ourselves, I see the obvious movement away from hands-on classroom training, and even on-site training, to much more web-based content.  Even that is split into two types:  pre-recorded, view anytime content and live, instructor-led, interactive webinars.  I have "attended" a lot of webinars over the last few years and I do struggle to keep my attention focused, especially if I have other distractions, such as email.  Also, most of the webinars tend to go down the "Death by PowerPoint" route, so that needs to be avoided.

One way that keeps me focused is if there is an outcome.  This is what Motorola and AT&T have achieved in the programs that we have enrolled in at O'Neil Software.  I have to sit through several webinars and take tests every year, not only to ensure I am up-to-date on the technology, but also to maintain product certification.

This certification concept is something that recently has been asked of me for O'Neil Software's products.  I have been approached at conferences and asked if we can "certify" an RS-SQL or RSMobile user.  It sounds like a good idea, but what do you think?  Would this help to focus training efforts?  Having trained staff certainly makes an operation more efficient, but is this enough to get your staff enthusiastic about training?

OK... enough questions.  Why not take part in our online poll or post a comment at: http://www.oneilsoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=539.0

O’Neil Software to Sponsor Orange County Ronald McDonald House® Keeps Families of Seriously Ill Children Together

Here is the opening paragraphs from our Press Release, which explains a little about this charity:

"No parent ever plans for this.  And  those who have experienced the occasional frightening thought, prefer to think of it as “something that could never happen to my child.“

But sadly, oftentimes it does. A child becomes seriously ill and a family must travel long distances to get the medical attention they need.  Hospital treatments may last a day, a month, or even more than a year.  For the families of these children, affordable accommodations are few and far between and are often limited to costly hotels, or unforgiving hospital chairs.

That’s why O’Neil Software will be sponsoring/partnering with the Orange County (OC) Ronald McDonald House at their 2010 Strategic Partner Conference in Huntington Beach, California, April 21—23.  The  goal is to help this caring, compassionate and charitable organization lift some of the heavy financial burden on families, who already struggle with so many concerns and fears.  The idea behind the Ronald McDonald House is simple: provide a comfortable and affordable “home away from home” for families shouldering the burdens associated with a child, who is being treated at a nearby hospital."

So why did we chose this charity?  As always, we want to focus on charities that support children.  Last year, we all helped to raise over $23,000 for the national charity Share our Strength.  This year, as we looked at charities, we saw a growing strain on parents who had sick children and, in many cases, had no idea how they could stay with their child as they went through treatment.  This was especially noticeable in Orange County, due to its world leading medical facilities, such as CHOC.  Families travelled here from all over the world, but needed somewhere to stay.  This is how the OC Ronald McDonald House came to our attention.  Although it carries the Ronald McDonald name, it is by no means fully funded by that organizaton.  They give them a tremendous start, but the House still needs our help, and we intend to see what we can do.

We simply ask that you consider a $100 donation when you register for the Strategic Partner Conference.  You can even make a donation if you do not plan to come.  We will also plan some events, drawings, raffles and such at the the conference to see if we can help this worthy cause.

Thank you for working with us to help children in need and their families.
